Glemsford, Suffolk: 7th September, 1841 . 0. 6 page paper document. 33cm x 21cm. Green silk tyes. 3 horizontal folds. Paper soiled and wear to edges and folds. Clear handwritten content including receipt of the deposit from Richard Pettitt. ** Family history records show that, when Richard Pettitt was born on December 10, 1812, in Glemsford, Suffolk, England, his father, Richard, was 22 and his mother, Hannah, was 19. is occupation was: Carpenter. He married Maria Adams on June 24, 1835, in his hometown. They had nine children in 15 years. He died in September 1853 in Suffolk, England, at the age of 40. In the 1851 census he is listed as a pauper. I therefore assume he was seriously ill. I would be interested in any further information.

Will & Probate of Rev Francis Creswell of Great Waldingfield, Suffolk
Great Waldingfield, Sudbury, Suffolk: Reverend Francis Cresswell 22nd December 1841 (Probate) 0. 22" x 27". 2 vellum sheets written on one side. Two vertical folds and three horizontal folds. Plus the probate certificate is attached , including the paper/wax seal. ** Family history records show Francis Cresswell was born in 1762. He married Jane Okes on October 12, 1807, in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He died on November 17, 1841, in Suffolk, England, having lived a long life of 79 years, and was buried in Great Waldingfield, Suffolk. *** "1807 - Francis Cresswell, S.T.B, Clare College, Cambridge; B.A. 1785; M.A. 1788; B.D. 1796; Fellow and Tutor; was instituted March 24, 1807, enjoying the benefice thirty-five years.He died Nov. 17. and was burried here November 24, 1841, aged 78 years. There is a tablet in the church. In the churchyard, West of the church, is a stone with the initials: "F.C." 1841, J.C. 1870. The Parish register gives Francis Cresswell, buried 24 Nov, 1841, aged 78. Sherratt sc. after a painting by Henry Bridgeman Pt. 3.6" x 2.3" . ** Thomas Sherratt , engraver, 1812-1880. ** Henry Bridgman (1831–1909) was baptised at St Peter’s church, Sudbury on 7 October 1831, son of John Bridgman (c1803-31 January 1880), a linen draper, Henry was apprenticed to printer/bookseller George Williams Fulcher (1795-1855) at 17 Market Hill, Sudbury, with whom he worked closely on illustrating the latter’s annual Pocket Books..He died at Sudbury on 7 November 1909, aged 78 - See: Copsey - Suffolk Book Trades (2012)).

Polished Maroon morocco with gilt decoration. Spine with similar decoration and gilt title: "Album". Central brass lock and key stamped "T. H. Bull" . Inner gilt dentelles. Original patterned endpapers. Dedication to front free-endpaper: "Marian St. H. E. Coffin from her affectionately attached Hele, Bangalaru 12 Febry. 1840." original drawings, numerous plates (some hand-coloured) pasted-in, on variously coloured leaves, some with embossed frames by De La Rue & Co, London. Artists/Family members identified inculde: Jemima Harrington (Mother); Beatrice Harrington (Daughter); Engraving of Maryanne Fletcher (sister-in-law); Engraving of Edward Fletcher (brother-in-law); 3 engravings of properties owned by the Harrington family in the Isle of Wight; Engraving by M. Rols of Sir Ralph Palmer (with his signature) ; Jemima Davenport Harrington (sister); Sepia Photograph of Marian Isabell Steuart (Grand daughter) ** Sir Ralph Palmer was Chief Justice of Madras (1825-1835). First called to the bar 1808. Married Margaret Eliza Fearon in Madras 1829. She was the daughter of a Colonel in the EIC Army. The couple had a son Frederick Palmer, born Madras 1830 and a daughter Georgina Palmer born Madras 1831. Death of Ralph Palmer registered Q2 1838; will of Sir Ralph Palmer of Farnham Surrey proved 22/03/1838." - See Legacies of British Slavery *** Family History Records show that: "Marianne St Helena Elizabeth Harington was born in 1810, her father, Capt, was 30, and her mother, Jemima, was 34. She married Gen. Sir Isaac Campbell Coffin on 12 February 1824 in West Bengal, India. They had eight children in 12 years. She died on 13 February 1864 in Tamil Nadu, India, at the age of 54, and was buried there.".

Including the original envelope with penny-red stamp addressed to Philip Foster, Park Place, Leeds. Black edge to both envelope and leatter. Rear of envelope with black wax royal seal and circular postmarks for Leeds and Ballater, and Aberdeen. ** Family history records show: Philip Foster was born in 1840 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, his father, Edwin, was 31 and his mother, Harriette, was 25. He is listed as a Surgeon MD. Obviously with some royal association. He had two brothers and three sisters. He died on August 22, 1927, at the age of 87, and was buried in his hometown.

He died in 1881 at the age of 72, and was buried in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England.

Cornard, Sudbury, Suffolk: 1891 - 1892 . 0. When William Rayner was born in 1861 in Little Cornard, Suffolk, his father, William (a blacksmith), was 40 and his mother, Hannah, was 38. He married Eliza Gilbert in 1887. He is first recorded as a blacksmith, but then became a Postm and moving closer to Sudbury. His last residence was 42 East Street, Sudbury. They had six children in 10 years. He died in December 1934 at the age of 73. The "In Memoriam" cards relate to three of his children who died in their early years.

Major General Sir Howard Elphinstone, 1st Baronet CB (4 March 1773 – 28 April 1846) was a commander of the Royal Engineers in the Peninsular War. Elphinstone was the youngest son of John Elphinstone, a captain in the Royal Navy and for a period a vice-admiral in the Russian Navy. His mother was Amelia, daughter of John Warburton.. He was created 1st Baronet of Elphinstone, of Sowerby in the County of Cumberland, in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 25 May 1816, and nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath." - See Wikipedia.

Wharton Court, Leominster, Herefordshire: 28th June 1866 . 0. A n original leather folder containing a glazed, hand written address from the Commitee Members, signed by the Chairman: "Jonathan Meredith", "Wharton Court 28th June, 1866." The hand witten address has coloured and historated initials, with in a blue ruled border. 11.0" x 9.0". The leather folder (or case), is covered in green/blue callf. Gilt title to front cover: "Address Presented To Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Arkwright, June 28th 1866." 11.5" x 9.5" x 1.0". ** J. H. Arkwright was born on 12th July 1833, the eldest son of John Arkwright Esq, of Hampton Court, Herefordshire and Sarah, eldest daughter of Sir Hungerford Hoskyns Bart. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and succeeded to the Hampton Court Estate on the death of his father in 1858. In 1866 he married Charlotte Lucy, daughter of John Davenport of Foxley, Herefordshire, by whom he had one son, John, later Sir John, author of 'The Supreme Sacrifice', and three daughters. He died in 1905 at the age of 72. The Hampton Court Estate, which he inherited at the age of 25, was purchased in 1810 by Richard Arkwright of Willersley, Derbyshire, only son of Sir Richard Arkwright, the Derbyshire cotton industrialist, from the trustee of the Earl of Essex, whose family had held it since the sixteenth century. It was extended both by John Arkwright and his son and in 1873 comprised over ten thousand acres in seven parishes, together with manorial rights, advowsons, tithes and the most imposing mansion in the county." - See Herefordshire Archive Service Catalogue.
